Alex Smola

Director, Amazon Web Services / D2L. AutoGluon. DGL.
Since 2016, Alex Smola has served as the director of machine learning at Amazon Web Services. His work focuses on the development of tools for data scientists using machine learning, statistical data analysis, computer vision, deep learning, and NLP. Around 200 publications have been written by Alex, who has also edited five volumes and mentored several Ph.D. candidates and researchers. His main research interests are in statistical modeling, applications in document analysis, user modeling, and scalability of methods.
At the University of Technology, Munich, Alex earned his master's degree in 1996. In 1998, he graduated with a doctorate in computer science from the University of Technology Berlin. Afterward, he worked as a researcher for the IDA Group and the Research School for Information Sciences and Engineering at Australian National University. Moreover, he has lectured at Carnegie Mellon University and conducted research with industry leaders including Yahoo and Google. Alex joined to Amazon Web Services in 2016 to create artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities for the business after co-founding the Marianas Laboratories in 2015.
